If you are searching for tattoo trends on TikTok or Instagram, you will eventually be dazzled by them: UV tattoos (also known as blacklight tattoos). In short video clips, you see inconspicuous lines that suddenly glow in vibrant neon green, pink, or brilliant blue under the light of a UV lamp. It is reminiscent of cyberpunk, raves, and seems like pure magic on the skin.
The demand for these glowing works of art, which are almost invisible in everyday life and become absolute eye-catchers in the club, has risen massively. But before you get carried away by the hype, there are a few hard facts that hardly anyone talks about. As a tattoo artist and founder of Old Dragon Ink in Dinkelsbühl, your skin health is always my top priority. In this article, we clear up the dangerous myth of ‘glow-in-the-dark’ inks, look at the legal situation in the EU, and explain why this glowing trend is often short-lived.
Myth vs. Truth: Does the tattoo really glow in the dark?
The biggest misconception right up front: A modern UV tattoo does not glow by itself when you turn off the bedroom light at night.
It is essential to distinguish between two things here:
- Glow-in-the-Dark (phosphorescent colors): These colors store daylight and glow by themselves in the dark. In the tattoo scene, such colors are strictly taboo and highly dangerous. To achieve this effect, phosphorus is required – a substance that is toxic and carcinogenic and should under no circumstances be injected under human skin!
- UV-reactive colors (blacklight tattoos): This is the variation shown in videos. This ink fluoresces exclusively when illuminated by an external blacklight source (UV light). Without this special lamp, the tattoo remains invisible or looks like a very pale scar.
The problem with ingredients and the REACH regulation
Tattooing is a medical-like procedure. The ink remains in your body for the rest of your life. This is exactly the most critical point regarding UV colors.
To achieve the fluorescent effect, these inks contain chemical compounds (often PMMA – polymethyl methacrylate) that are not found in classic tattoo inks.
- Increased allergy risk: The body reacts to these microscopic plastic particles with rejection reactions, severe itching, or painful inflammation much more frequently than it does to classic, carbon-based black ink.
- The EU REACH regulation: Since the beginning of 2022, extremely strict guidelines for tattoo inks have been in effect in the European Union to protect consumers from harmful substances. Many of the classic UV inks used in the USA or Asia do not meet the criteria here and are simply illegal because their long-term effects on the body have not been sufficiently researched.
Durability: When the glow fades
Assuming you find an ink that complies with the regulations – what does the tattoo look like after a few years? Similar to purely white tattoos (white ink), disappointment is often inevitable.
The fluorescent particles in the ink are broken down relatively quickly by UV radiation (i.e., normal sunlight) and your own immune system.
- Optical decay: After one to two years, the tattoo usually loses its luminosity. Under blacklight, it no longer looks like a bright neon marker, but rather patchy and uneven.
- In daylight: The appearance is even more problematic in everyday life. As the ink ages and blends with the skin’s natural pigments, UV tattoos often leave behind yellowish or brownish discolorations that look like a faded scar or a skin spot.

For precisely these health and quality reasons, we consciously refrain from tattooing UV tattoos. A tattoo is meant to accompany you for a lifetime and not become a health risk or an eyesore after two summers.
