The Anatomy: What Exactly Is the Tragus?
Gently touch your ear: the tragus is the small, slightly thicker cartilage flap that sits like a little protective shield right in front of your ear canal.
Since anatomy varies completely from person to person, the tragus isn’t the same size or prominence in everyone. Some have a wide, flat surface that’s even suitable for a double tragus (two studs stacked), while in others the flap is very narrow. Ella always examines your ear closely before piercing to ensure there’s enough space for the jewelry and that the piercing will sit at the perfect angle later.
The Piercing and the Pain: Why the Tragus Crunches
The cartilage tissue at the tragus is relatively thick compared to the rest of the earlobe. Nevertheless, for most clients it’s not one of the most painful piercings, since there are very few nerve endings here. It’s more of an intense, brief pressure.
What surprises many clients much more than the pain, however, is the sound. Since Ella works directly at the entrance to your ear canal, the sound transmits extremely strongly. When the sterile needle penetrates the cartilage, you hear a loud, dull “crunch” or “pop” right inside your head. Don’t panic—that’s completely normal! Ella prepares you for this moment and pierces the channel calmly and lightning-fast.
(Important: Especially with the thick tragus cartilage, using a piercing gun is absolutely forbidden! We work exclusively with razor-sharp single-use needles to protect the tissue.)
Ring or Stud? Ella’s Initial Jewelry Rule
As with almost all cartilage piercings, the same applies to the tragus: A ring as initial jewelry is not a good idea.
Ella always uses a slightly longer titanium labret stud for the fresh piercing. This has a tiny, flat disc on the back (which faces into the ear canal).
- Why no ring? A ring would further constrict the already thick cartilage area during the inevitable swelling and constantly rotate dirt into the piercing channel.
- Why titanium? Implant-grade titanium (ASTM F136) is completely nickel-free and guarantees the safest and fastest wound healing.
When your ear has gone down after a few weeks, you come in for the downsize appointment. The long bar is replaced with a shorter one so you don’t get caught on things. Once everything has completely healed after a few months, nothing stands in the way of your delicate ring!
Healing and Care: The Final Boss—In-Ear Headphones
The tragus piercing heals—like all cartilage piercings—very slowly. You should expect a healing time of 6 to 9 months. Since this piercing is very exposed, there are some pitfalls in daily life that you need to watch out for:
- The in-ear headphone ban: This is the toughest rule for many music lovers. In the first months after piercing, in-ear headphones (like AirPods) or earplugs on the pierced side are absolutely off-limits! They press directly against the flat disc of the stud from behind, irritate the wound, and are also real bacteria magnets.
- Phone calls and dirt: Be careful not to press your smartphone directly against the fresh piercing. Disinfect your phone screen regularly.
- Sleeping: Here too, Ella’s favorite tip applies: Get yourself a travel neck pillow and position your ear in the opening when sleeping. Pressure from the pillow is the most common reason for crooked healing of tragus piercings and unsightly irritation bumps.
- Cleaning: Spray carefully with a sterile piercing spray (e.g., saline solution) twice daily. Never twist the stud or scrape off crusts with your fingernails!
