An old tattoo that no longer feels like you, youthful mistakes, or faded lines—lots of people wear designs on their skin they’d rather get rid of sooner rather than later. But there’s often this fear: “You can only cover it with a huge black rectangle anyway.”
At Old Dragon Ink, we say: Not true. The fact that we’ve been listed for the 5th year in a row as one of Germany’s best studios in the Tattoo Elite Book is mainly because we’ve perfected the craft of transformation—cover-ups.
The myth: cover-up = blackout?
A lot of tattoo artists take the easy route: to hide an old tattoo, they use heavy, dark ink. The result is often a solid block with hardly any aesthetic appeal.
But a real cover-up isn’t just “painting over” something. It’s a strategic play with light, shadow, and anatomy. You don’t need deep black to make an old design disappear—you need an understanding of how the eye perceives depth.
Fine-line magic: Black & Grey instead of dark blocks
Our current project (see photo) makes it clear: a once-dominant, dark tribal on the back was transformed into a delicate, detailed lily.
- The trick: We use the existing dark pigments from the old tattoo and integrate them as natural shadows in the new design.
- The effect: Where there used to be rigid lines, there are now soft gradients and fine details.
- Color or Black & Grey: Whether we work with vibrant colors to draw the eye away, or with subtle shades of grey—the goal is always a tattoo that stands on its own and doesn’t look like a “last resort.”

How can you tell a cover-up pro?
If you’re thinking about a cover-up, look for these three things:
- Personal consultation: A pro takes a close look at the old tattoo. Scar tissue, ink saturation, and placement determine what’s possible.
- Design know-how: The new design often needs to be 20–30% larger than the old one to shift the focus smartly. A good tattoo artist doesn’t just slap something on top—they create a one-of-a-kind piece that complements the body’s flow.
- Patience & experience: Sometimes multiple layers are needed to achieve perfect coverage with maximum detail.
Conclusion: Your skin deserves a second chance
For many of our clients, a cover-up is a huge mental relief. It’s about feeling comfortable in your own skin again. The fact that we, as the Old Dragon Ink team, are regularly counted among Germany’s tattoo elite gives you peace of mind: we know what we’re doing.
We don’t perform miracles in a magical sense—but we use years of experience and artistic skill to achieve results that look like a miracle to most people.
