Do you remember the tattoo studios of the early 2000s? Back then, when you opened the door, you were immediately hit by the pungent smell of green soap, and the loud, aggressive buzzing of the machines could be heard from a street away. Those who got tattooed 20 years ago experienced a craft that was full of passion, but still in its infancy in terms of technology and medicine.
Today, the tattoo world has completely changed. What started as a rough subculture has become a highly precise, medically-oriented art form. As the founder and tattoo artist of Old Dragon Ink in Dinkelsbühl, I work daily with the most modern tools the market has to offer. However, when we look back, it becomes clear just how massive the leap in technology, hygiene, and healing has been over the last two decades. A direct comparison between then and now.
1. Machines and needles: From jackhammer to high-tech pen
Probably the biggest and most noticeable difference for you as a customer lies in the tools we use.
20 years ago: The coil machine Back then, the classic coil machine reigned supreme. It was heavy, unwieldy, and operated via electromagnets that moved the needle bar up and down like a small jackhammer.
- The feeling: The machines vibrated extremely strongly, which was a massive strain on the artist’s joints after hours of work. For the customer, the loud, harsh buzzing was often nerve-wracking, and the tattooing process felt significantly rougher.
- The needles: Needles were often still soldered onto long metal bars by the tattoo artist themselves. After the session, the solid steel grips had to be painstakingly cleaned in an autoclave (sterilizer) and prepared for the next client.
Today: Wireless Rotary Pens and Needle Modules If you step into our studio today, you will hear almost nothing. Modern technology is whisper-quiet.
- The Feeling: We work with wireless rotary machines that resemble thick pens in both appearance and weight. They barely vibrate, glide butter-smooth over the skin, and cause significantly less tissue trauma (skin injury). For you, this means less pain and less swelling.
- The Needles: The absolute game-changer is sterile needle modules (cartridges). The needles are safely sealed in small plastic housings and are simply clicked onto the machine. If I want to switch from a fine line (liner) to a broad shading (shader), I can swap the module in a fraction of a second. After a single use, they are completely disposed of – a massive plus for hygiene.
2. Medical Standards and Ink: Safety First
Tattooing is an invasive procedure on the human body. Here, too, the standards have shifted drastically.
20 Years Ago: While hygiene standards were in place, they were by no means as strictly regulated as they are today. Inks were often still acrylic-based, contained heavy metals, and were not always vegan. Allergic reactions or the “spreading” of ink under the skin (blowouts) occurred more frequently due to the heavier equipment and the types of inks used.
Today: A professional studio now resembles a medical facility in many ways. At our studio in Dinkelsbühl, we work exclusively with strictly tested, REACH-compliant and vegan inks that meet the strictest EU guidelines. Free from heavy metals and questionable preservatives. Workstations are completely covered with sterile disposable barriers, and our cross-contamination protocols leave no room for error. This medical safety is the foundation of our daily work.
3. The Healing Process (Aftercare): Plastic Wrap vs. Second Skin
You’ve survived the session – but what happens next? Wound care has also undergone a revolution.
20 years ago: Plastic wrap The standard was to smear the fresh tattoo thickly with Vaseline or healing ointment and wrap it in standard household cling film.
- The problem: Heat built up under the plastic film, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. When you removed the film, a thick scab often formed on the tattoo. If this accidentally cracked, the tattoo would lose color in that exact spot.
Today: Moist wound healing with Second Skin Today, we swear by state-of-the-art, medical Second Skin films (such as Suprasorb F).
- This breathable polyurethane patch is applied immediately after the session and stays on for several days. It is waterproof (you can shower with it!), provides perfect protection against dirt, and prevents the wound from drying out.
- The result: Hardly any thick scabbing forms. The tattoo heals in its own wound fluid (the so-called ink sack) completely undisturbed, and the colors remain incredibly rich and sharp under the skin.

The fine-line work or the detailed micro-realism we tattoo today would simply not have been possible with the crude technology of 20 years ago, especially not with this level of durability.
