The Reality of Laser Removal: Lengthy and Painful
If you want an old tattoo to disappear completely, there’s no way around modern laser technology (like the Pico laser) today. The laser shoots extremely short, hot pulses of light at the color pigments under the skin. The pigments shatter into tiny pieces and are carried away by your body’s own lymphatic system over several months.
That sounds great in theory, but in practice, there are a few catches:
- The pain: Let’s be real – laser treatment hurts. Many clients describe the feeling as if a hot rubber band is being snapped against the skin over and over again. It’s often more uncomfortable than getting the tattoo itself.
- The duration: A tattoo doesn’t disappear after one session. Depending on the age, depth, and color of the tattoo, you often need 6 to 12 sessions (or more), with several weeks of healing time in between. The process can drag on for one to two years.
- The cost: Every session costs money. A complete removal usually exceeds the price of the original tattoo many times over.
- The risk: Especially with bright colors, unsightly “ghost images” (shadows) often remain, or the skin may scar slightly from the heat treatment.

The Compromise: Lightening instead of complete removal
Does that mean laser treatment is generally bad? Absolutely not! The laser is a fantastic tool, but in the tattoo world, we usually don’t see it as the final solution, but as preparation.
If your old tattoo is extremely dark, scarred, or solid black, we often advise you to have it lasered for 1 to 3 sessions. The goal here isn’t to erase the tattoo completely, but merely to lighten it significantly (fading). And why? Because that’s when the real magic can begin!
The Cover-Up: From eyesore to absolute masterpiece
Why should you leave a blank, perhaps slightly scarred spot on your skin when you could wear a breathtaking piece of art instead? A cover-up tattoo is the ultimate discipline of tattoo art – and for many clients, it’s an emotional and aesthetic lifesaver.
