Tattoo Prices: Why Real Body Art Has Its Value and How Costs Are Determined

It’s completely normal and understandable: The first question that comes to most people’s minds when they envision their dream design is: “What will it cost?”

The topic of tattoo prices is often treated like a state secret in the scene. We think that’s a shame, because transparency is the most important foundation for trust. A tattoo is not a mass-produced item from a catalog. It’s a custom-made craft, a medical-like procedure, and – above all – an investment in yourself that you’ll wear on your skin for the rest of your life.

At Old Dragon Ink in Dinkelsbühl, we speak openly about costs, because we know that excellent art has its value. In this guide, we’ll explain why blanket price lists are rarely possible in the tattoo world, which factors determine your price, and why a “cheap” tattoo often ends up being the most expensive.

The Price Factors: Why Blanket Statements Are So Difficult

“How much does a full arm cost?” or “How expensive is a lion on the thigh?” – We receive these questions daily. But a reputable studio can never give a blanket answer immediately without knowing your exact wishes.

The price for your tattoo is made up of various, very individual factors:

  1. Size and level of detail: A palm-sized mandala in a delicate fineline style can take longer due to countless fine lines and dots than a significantly larger, simple blackwork design. The more details, the more working time.
  2. Body placement: Skin texture varies. Areas like the ribs, neck, or stomach are often more challenging to tattoo. The skin needs to be stretched more, and you, as the client, might need more breaks. All of this affects the time – and thus the price.
  3. Color vs. Black & Grey: An elaborate color tattoo often requires more materials (various ink caps, needle changes) and techniques like “color packing” (the dense application of color), which intensifies the process.
  4. The custom design: You don’t just pay for the pure time the machine is buzzing. The price also includes the consultation, creative research, and the individual drawing (or freehand adjustment) of your unique piece.

The Starting Price: Why There’s No “50-Euro Tattoo”

Even for a tiny, one-centimeter letter or a minimalist heart, every professional studio has a fixed base or starting price (often referred to as a setup fee).

Why is that? Every time you take a seat in our chair, our artists completely prepare the workstation anew.

  • Sterile needle cartridges are opened (which are disposed of after a single use).
  • High-quality, REACH-compliant inks are provided.
  • Table covers, disinfectants, gloves, sterile grips, and dressing materials (like Suprasorb) are used.

These material and hygiene costs are incurred with every appointment, regardless of whether we tattoo for 10 minutes or 6 hours. A professional studio makes absolutely no compromises on hygiene and safety – and this is reflected in a fair base price.

The Day Rate Model for Large Projects

If you’re planning a large project, such as a complete sleeve (arm), a back piece, or a large thigh tattoo, billing is usually no longer based on individual centimeters.

Here, our artists usually work with so-called day sessions. This means you book the artist for a full day. This gives the tattoo artist absolute creative freedom to concentrate entirely on your large project for that day, find the perfect flow for shading, and give you the breaks you need. It’s the fairest and most relaxed way to create massive artworks.

Good Tattoos Aren’t Cheap, and Cheap Tattoos Aren’t Good

Perhaps you’ve heard this old saying before. Unfortunately, it proves true every day. A “scratch” in a private living room might promise you a large tattoo for little money. But the consequences – from scarred skin (blowouts) and crooked lines to severe infections due to lack of hygiene – are often devastating.

Later laser removal or an elaborate cover-up (covering the old tattoo) by a professional ultimately costs many times what you originally wanted to save. A tattoo is the only piece of clothing you can never take off. Saving money in the wrong place here is almost always a mistake.

Our Pricing Philosophy at Old Dragon Ink

We know that a larger tattoo is a financial investment for many clients, one they might save up for. That’s precisely why absolute fairness and transparency are so important to us.

At Old Dragon Ink in Dinkelsbühl, you can expect no hidden costs.

  • Honest Consultation: In our preliminary discussion, we’ll discuss your design in detail. We’ll realistically estimate the time required and provide you with a transparent price range upfront, so you know exactly what to expect.
  • Quality Without Compromise: We continuously invest in the best equipment, the latest needle technologies, and the highest quality vegan inks on the market. Your health and the best possible, long-lasting final result are our top priorities.
  • Respect for Your Budget: If you have a fixed budget, communicate it openly with us! Often, we can adapt designs or divide projects into sensible partial sessions so that they are absolutely financially feasible for you.

You’re not just paying us for a bit of ink. You’re investing in decades of experience, in sterile, medical-grade hygiene standards, in artistic custom work, and in a studio experience where you feel safe and perfectly cared for from the first draft to the final healing.

Want to know how much your dream tattoo will cost? Come by our studio for a coffee or send us a message with your idea, approximate size, and desired body placement. We’ll advise you completely without obligation and transparently!
