When you look at a colorful tattoo, you don’t see the color directly. The needle deposits the ink into the middle layer of skin (the dermis). Above that sits the outer layer (the epidermis).
Your epidermis isn’t completely transparent—it contains melanin, the substance that gives you your individual skin tone. So think of your epidermis like a lightly tinted pane of glass through which you’re viewing the color in the dermis.

The secret to a tattoo that stays vibrant is simple: Once the tattoo is fully healed, sunscreen with SPF 50 is non-negotiable whenever you’re outdoors. Also moisturize your skin regularly with a good lotion so the “pane of glass” over your tattoo stays supple and clear.
