Tattoo Cover-up & Rework: North Atlantic waves, an anchor, and the secret in the water

Often, clients come to our studio with a whole handful of ideas. There might be an old tattoo that needs saving, a few unfortunate lines that need covering up, and then that one vague thought at the back of their mind: “At some point, I’d really like to have this one specific motif…” The art of a truly great tattoo artist isn’t just about slapping all those ideas onto the skin like stickers side-by-side. It’s about merging them into a single, flowing work of art. As a tattoo artist at Old Dragon Ink in Dinkelsbühl, my goal is to build exactly those creative bridges. Using this spectacular leg project, I’ll show you how we seamlessly connected a cover-up, a fresh-up, and a long-cherished client wish through the raw energy of North Atlantic water.

The Starting Point: An old hourglass and distracting lines

Let’s take a look at the inlay (before photo) of this project. On the calf, there was a heavily faded hourglass, below which some unstructured, old lines and patches of color stretched down the lower leg.

The mission was clear: The hourglass wasn’t supposed to disappear, but be saved (a so-called rework). However, the indefinable spots underneath had to give way to a genuine, opaque cover-up. In addition, the client wanted a maritime theme with water – but not a Caribbean light blue; rather, the gloomy, powerful color scheme of the North Atlantic.

The Flow: How gloomy water connects everything

To make a tattoo flow over half the leg (from the knee down to the ankle), you need a strong link. The deep blue, turbulent water performs exactly this function.

  • The hourglass fresh-up: We have breathed new life into the old hourglass with fresh, rich contours and vibrant white highlights. The water now flows organically around it, embedding it perfectly into the new design.
  • The maritime cover-up: To make the old, unsightly lines in the lower area disappear, we placed a highly detailed compass and a massive anchor in Black & Grey realism. The deep black shading and the complex structure of the anchor and rope completely absorb those old youthful mistakes.

The creative surprise: The hidden skull

This is where the absolute highlight of this project comes into play. During our consultation, the client mentioned in passing that she had once considered getting a skull tattoo. It was just a vague idea, and she didn’t want a massive, dominant skull placed harshly anywhere.

This is the moment where we as artists are challenged. We suggested a creative compromise: Why not incorporate the skull into the waves as an illusion?

  • If you look at the deep blue water flow right next to the hourglass, you will recognize it: The face of a skull forms out of the dark shadows and lines of the North Atlantic waves.
  • It is subtle, almost ghostly, and does not push itself into the foreground.

Through this creative approach, the client not only received her desired cover-up and rework, but also her long-cherished wish for a skull – and in a much more elegant and unique way than she had originally imagined.

Tailor-made art at Old Dragon Ink

A good tattoo doesn’t just solve a problem (like covering an old scar or a poor tattoo), it also tells a story. It utilizes your body’s anatomy – like the flow along the calf down to the top of the foot shown here – to create dynamic movement.

Here in Dinkelsbühl, I take the time to listen to all your loose ideas and wishes. We filter them, structure them, and design a custom-made concept that exceeds your expectations. We make no compromises when it comes to craftsmanship; instead, we find creative solutions that transform your skin into a true work of art.
