Some tattoos don’t stay with us forever—and sometimes that’s a good thing. In this case, it was a teenage token of love that eventually lost its meaning: a name on the pelvic area, paired with a classic rose—unfortunately split in terms of design and hard to harmonize shape-wise.
The client wanted a fresh, modern cover-up—ideally without making the area bigger and without falling back on old motifs. The solution? A creative, dynamic, bold-color design in an abstract watercolor style with two expressive roses.
The problem: wrong alignment and harsh lines
What made this cover-up especially challenging wasn’t just the content (name + rose), but above all the unflattering composition:
- The lettering ran horizontally along the underwear line
- The original rose was vertically above it, at a 90° angle
- Overall, it looked angular, rigid, and not in flow with the body
A classic case that often drives people to despair—but not Dimi.
The solution: a color explosion with organic flow
Instead of just putting “something big” over it, Dimi at Old Dragon Ink developed a clever concept that breaks up and overlays the original structure while also blending aesthetically with the body.
The result:
- Two stylized roses in bold red and intense blue
- Combined with loose watercolor washes, splatters, and ink effects
- The angled orientation of the motif breaks up the old rigidity
- The whole area now feels flowing, powerful, and modern
Despite the challenge, the tattoo was not made oversized—it stays elegant, feminine, and wearable.
A cover-up doesn’t have to be a compromise
Many people think a successful cover-up mainly needs size and darkness—but the opposite can work just as well. With the right technique, a feel for body lines, and a bit of courage to switch styles, you can turn even the toughest tattoos into something unique and beautiful.
For the client, it was a huge step toward a fresh start. And because she was so happy, several new projects followed right away.
