Congratulations, you’ve made it through the session and your new artwork is finally under your skin! But your artist’s work only accounts for 50% of the final result – the other 50% is now in your hands. The right aftercare determines whether your tattoo heals sharp and vibrant or loses color and scars.
For a long time, classic household cling film was the standard in the tattoo scene. But fortunately, medicine and technology have evolved. Today, professional studios swear by Second Skin Tattoo Film (often known by brand names like Suprasorb F, Dermalize, or Saniderm). At Old Dragon Ink in Dinkelsbühl, we use these medical wonder films for almost all our projects. In this guide, we’ll explain why this patch is an absolute game-changer, how the principle of “moist wound healing” works, and why you don’t need to panic about the dark fluid bubble under the film.
What exactly is a Second Skin film?
Unlike rigid kitchen cling film, Second Skin is a state-of-the-art, ultra-thin polyurethane patch from medical wound care (originally developed for burn wounds).
Our artist applies it directly to your fresh tattoo under sterile conditions after tattooing and cleaning. It forms an invisible, second layer of skin (hence the name) over the design and literally merges with your body.
Bye-bye cling film: The 4 gigantic advantages
Why do we at Old Dragon Ink love this film so much? It’s simple – it makes your life incredibly easy during the first critical days:
- Breathable, yet waterproof: The film has microscopic pores. It allows oxygen to reach the wound but keeps water and bacteria out. The best part: You can shower with it! No more cumbersome wrapping your arm in trash bags.
- Protection from dirt and friction: A fresh tattoo is an open abrasion. The film acts as an absolute barrier against pet hair, lint, dust, and bacteria. It also prevents your clothing from painfully rubbing against the fresh tattoo.
- No constant washing and moisturizing: While with the classic method you had to constantly wash and moisturize your tattoo during the first few days, Second Skin does the work all by itself. You simply leave it on your skin (according to your artist’s instructions) for 3 to 5 days.
- Moist wound healing: The film seals the wound and prevents it from drying out. Little to no thick scab (crust) forms, which massively minimizes the risk of color loss due to accidental scratching.
Don’t panic: The secret of the “Ink Sack”
This is the moment when most first-time clients get a small shock: After about 12 to 24 hours, a dark, mushy bubble of fluid forms under the film. The tattoo suddenly looks extremely blurry – often affectionately called “ink tea” or Ink Sack.
This is completely normal and even extremely good! Your body secretes wound fluid (blood plasma) to repair the tissue. This plasma mixes with excess ink that the skin would reject anyway. This “fluid bubble” is liquid gold for your healing, as it contains important macrophages and nutrients. The film keeps this healing fluid exactly where it’s needed. Your tattoo isn’t leaking, it’s healing!
(Important: If the film becomes leaky at any point and fluid escapes, the barrier is broken. In that case, you must remove the film prematurely.)
The correct removal: How to peel off the film painlessly
After the agreed-upon days (usually day 4 or 5), it’s time to say goodbye to the second skin. Please don’t make a mistake here: Never rip off the film with a jerk like a normal bandage! That would severely irritate the fresh skin.
The Old Dragon Ink Pro Tip for removal:
- Get in a warm shower. The warm water and steam will soften the medical adhesive.
- Grab the film at one corner.
- Do not pull it upwards at a 90-degree angle, but stretch it parallel to the skin (as if you were stretching chewing gum).
- By overstretching, the adhesive almost magically releases, and you can gently and painlessly roll off the film.
- Afterward, carefully wash the tattoo with a pH-neutral soap and begin applying a thin layer of moisturizing cream (tattoo aftercare cream).
