Anatomy: Where Exactly is the Rook Piercing Located?
The Rook piercing is placed vertically through the small, upper cartilage fold (the so-called antihelix fold), which is located above the daith and below the upper rim of the ear.
- Ella’s Anatomy Check: Not every ear is suitable for a Rook piercing. The cartilage fold must be prominent enough for the piercing to sit securely and not be under tension. Ella will examine your ear thoroughly beforehand: If the fold is too flat, we recommend an alternative (like a Faux Rook) for your health, to avoid complications.
The Pierce and the Pain: An Intense Moment
Since the Rook passes through a rather massive layer of cartilage, the pierce is a bit more intense than with a soft earlobe. Most clients describe the pain as a strong, dull pressure.
Similar to a Tragus or Conch, you might also hear a “crunching” sound as the needle glides through the cartilage layers. This is completely normal and no cause for concern. Ella works with special, razor-sharp hollow needles and a steady hand, so the actual moment of piercing only takes a few seconds.
(Important: Even for the Rook – keep your hands off piercing guns! These have absolutely no place in firm cartilage tissue.)
The Jewelry: Curved Barbell Instead of a Ring
For a fresh Rook piercing, Ella almost exclusively uses a curved barbell (a slightly curved bar) made of high-quality, hypoallergenic titanium as initial jewelry.
- Why no ring? A ring would cause too much movement in the narrow cartilage fold and press against the surrounding skin when swelling. A curved bar sits much more calmly in the channel and is also much easier to clean.
- Design Options: Once the piercing has healed stably after a few months, you can switch to rings (clickers) or barbells with beautiful attachments like sparkling crystals or opals.
Healing and Care: A Marathon for the Cartilage
Cartilage tissue has poor blood circulation, which is why a Rook piercing takes time to heal. You should expect a healing period of 6 to 12 months. Since the piercing is located in a fold, crusts and sweat tend to accumulate there, making careful hygiene essential.

- Systematic Cleaning: Spray the piercing twice daily with a sterile saline solution. Since the Rook is somewhat hidden, you can carefully use a lint-free cleaning cloth to remove softened crusts – but please never scratch forcefully!
- Hands Off: This is the most important rule. Every unnecessary touch or twist introduces bacteria into the wound and irritates the healing channel.
- Caution with Phones & Headphones: Make sure you don’t press your smartphone against your ear. Over-ear headphones can also put pressure on the area and should be avoided initially.
