Project Analysis: Heavenly Cherubs and Eternal Patterns
This piece of art captivates with its incredible softness and perfect architectural framing. It does not look like a simple image, but rather like a relief carved out of the arm.
- The classic cherubs (angels): At the center of the motif are two so-called cherubs – child-like angel figures that were omnipresent, especially in Renaissance and Baroque art. The upper angel looks down with a peaceful, almost melancholic expression, while the lower angel radiates pure calm and innocence with closed eyes. The detailed rendering of the curly hair and delicate facial features perfectly captures the classic aesthetic of old masterpieces.
- The structure of marble: The faces and bodies of the angels are created entirely without hard black outlines. Mark uses the finest smooth shading (buttery soft shading) to give the gentle curves of the childlike faces and bodies an extremely three-dimensional effect. The light appears to fall onto the design from above, creating realistic shadows under the cheeks and chins that imitate the typical, slightly cool stone look of statues.
