Summer, sun, beach – and a fresh piercing? Sounds tempting, but it can be a challenge. Whether you already have a piercing or are planning one for your vacation: Here’s what you should look out for regarding heat, water, air travel, and more – including Ella’s tips from experience.
☀️ Freshly pierced + sun = problem?
UV radiation, sweat, sand, sea, and chlorinated water are real stressors for a new piercing. Healing can be delayed, or it can even lead to inflammation.
Ella therefore recommends:
👉 Get your piercing at least 4–6 weeks before your vacation – depending on the location, even earlier.
👉 Don’t get a fresh piercing while on vacation! Hygiene standards in tourist shops abroad are often questionable.
🌊 Sea, pool & wellness? Better not (yet)!
Saltwater, chlorinated water, hot springs – sounds relaxing, but it’s poison for a fresh piercing.
Why?
- Bacteria can get in
- Chlorine dries out the wound
- Pressure & moisture irritate the skin
💡 Tip: If you do want to go into the water, protect the piercing with a waterproof bandage – but only for a short time!
🛫 Air travel and piercings – is it possible?
Yes – with a few tricks:
- Freshly pierced: No problem on a normal flight, but watch out for swelling due to pressure changes.
- TSA & security check: Metal in piercings rarely sets off the alarm – and you don’t have to take anything off. Just stay relaxed.
- Long-haul: Moisture & hygiene while traveling are important. Take cleaning products in your carry-on (small amounts)!
🧼 Aftercare while traveling – what you need:
- alcohol-free wound disinfectant (also available as a spray)
- spare piercing (for emergencies)
- sanitized cleaning wipe (for quick hand disinfection)
- If necessary, a small travel case/small one for jewelry
Ella will be happy to put together a travel aftercare kit for you – right here at our studio in Dinkelsbühl.
