A fresh piercing is more than just jewelry—it’s a small wound that needs time, care, and patience. But how long does healing really take? And what can you do to help your body? In this article, you’ll learn how much healing times can vary depending on the area—and what aftercare actually makes sense.
⏳ How long does a piercing take to heal?
Healing time depends heavily on the pierced area and your body’s own wound-healing process. Here’s a rough overview:
| Piercing location | Healing time (average) |
|---|---|
| Earlobe | 4–8 weeks |
| Helix / Tragus / Conch | 6–9 months |
| Nostril | 2–4 months |
| Septum | 2–3 months |
| Tongue | 1–2 months |
| Lips (Labret, Monroe) | 2–3 months |
| Belly Button | 3–6 months |
| Nipple | 2–12 months (varies a lot from person to person) |
| Intimate area (depending on the piercing) | 2–8 weeks to several months |
💡 Important: Just because a piercing looks good on the outside doesn’t mean it’s fully healed on the inside. So: patience pays off!
💧 The right aftercare—how to heal properly
- Clean regularly—but gently
Use an alcohol-free Octenisept (we also have it in the studio) and clean 1–2x daily. - Hands off!
Don’t twist it, pick at it, or keep touching it—this irritates a fresh piercing and can transfer bacteria. - No harsh products!
Wound sprays with alcohol, tea tree oil, or disinfectants are counterproductive. They often irritate the skin more than they help. - Don’t change the jewelry too early!
Make sure you keep the initial jewelry in until Ella gives you the green light—otherwise you risk inflammation or even the piercing channel closing. - Shower instead of bathing
While the piercing is fresh, avoid full baths, chlorinated and salt water, and saunas—and when showering, cover it for the first 14 days with a waterproof plaster!
⚠️ Complications—and what you can do
A slight throbbing, redness, or tingling is normal at first. But if you notice…
- a tangled hair in the stud
- throbbing pain,
- yellow-green discharge,
- fever, or
- an unpleasant smell
…contact Ella or come straight into the studio. Caught early = solved quickly.
