Tattooing is one of the most intimate art forms in the world. When you lie down in an artist’s chair, you give up a piece of control and trust that your body will be treated with respect. For most people, that’s a big step—but for people from the LGBTQIA+ community (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual), the topics of body shaming, acceptance, and bodily autonomy often have an even deeper, sometimes painful dimension.
At Old Dragon Ink in Dinkelsbühl, we have a very simple philosophy: Our studio is a place of art, respect, and absolute freedom. In this article, we want to—especially because it’s so important to take a clear stand in today’s world—talk about why we are a queer-friendly tattoo studio and an uncompromising safe space for all identities and ways of life.
Image Analysis: The Blade of Strength and the Colors of Pride
The current project by our artist Dimi brings this topic to life visually. It’s a powerful statement tattoo that unites aesthetics and deeply personal meaning.
The design shows a classic, majestic sword wrapped by two dynamic ribbons.
- The Sword: Traditionally a symbol of fighting spirit, courage, and strength. For many queer people, it also represents the inner (and often outer) battle they had to fight to be able to stand up for themselves.
- The Colors: The blade is surrounded by the classic Rainbow Pride Flag, the worldwide symbol of diversity and homosexuality, as well as the Transgender Pride Flag (pastel blue, pink, and white).
The colors are done in a modern, saturated color-packing style, making them extremely vibrant and creating a strong contrast with the black-and-grey blade. It’s a pride tattoo that is not only loud and proud, but also perfectly adapted to the anatomy of the forearm with exceptional craftsmanship.

Our Standard: Humanity Doesn’t Need a Dictionary
You might know the feeling: The world moves fast, there are constantly new terms, definitions, and labels. And to be honest: Even we in the studio don’t always have every new term or specific flag perfectly memorized right away.
But you know what? We don’t have to. At Old Dragon Ink, it’s not about reciting the latest terms flawlessly. It’s about something much bigger, something that should actually be the most normal thing in the world: Boundless acceptance. No matter who you love, what gender you identify with (or don’t), and what your life looks like—when you walk through our door, you are first and foremost a person with a story. We don’t judge, we don’t evaluate, and we don’t give anyone strange looks. We listen to you and bring your story under your skin with respect.
Reclaiming Your Own Body (Gender Affirming Tattoos)
For many people, especially trans*, non-binary, or queer individuals, their own body has often been a battlefield. Tattoos are an incredibly powerful tool to make peace with your own skin and literally “reclaim” your body.
We regularly complete projects in our studio that serve exactly this purpose:
- Scar Cover-Ups: For example, aesthetically tattooing over or framing surgical scars (such as after a mastectomy/top surgery). Ink can help transform scars from flaws into part of a beautiful work of art.
- Pronouns and Names: Immortalizing your chosen name (deadname cover-ups) or your own pronouns in the form of a delicate fineline tattoo.
- Symbolism of Transformation: Motifs like butterflies, phoenixes, or the sword from our example image that celebrate your own metamorphosis and the inner strength you’ve gained.
