In recent years, a completely new category has established itself in body art: the Meme Tattoo. What began as a funny trend on social media, where people got small stick figures tattooed, has now reached the premier class. More and more customers want to capture the humor of the internet for eternity – but in uncompromising, high-quality execution. As a tattoo artist and founder of Old Dragon Ink in Dinkelsbühl, I love projects that don’t take themselves too seriously but require absolute masterpieces in terms of craftsmanship. Using our fantastic “Wet Owl” project, I will show you what happens when a viral meme meets detail-oriented Black & Grey realism and abstract art.
The Inspiration: The unhappiest owl on the internet
Let’s take a look at the template (in the small inlay of the picture). Anyone who has ever been caught in the rain or had an absolutely miserable Monday morning feels this picture on a spiritual level.
The template shows a completely soaked little owl. Its plumage is matted against its body, and its huge, pitch-black eyes stare into the camera, completely resigned and stunned. It looks like a little, unhappy alien. It is one of those images that you look at and inevitably have to laugh. A perfect meme. The customer knew: exactly this facial expression, exactly this absurd comedy has to go under the skin.
Project Analysis: A meme, but in high-end quality
The joke behind such a project only lands if the craftsmanship is absolutely flawless. If the tattoo looks like a cheap joke, it loses its appeal. Let’s take a look at the healed result on the calf:
- Pure Realism – The wet plumage: Tattooing wet feathers is a completely different challenge than dry, fluffy fur. The feathers stick together in strands. To create this “wet look,” we use stark contrasts in Black & Grey Realism. Deep black shadows between the feather strands and crisp, white highlights imitate the reflective wetness and the water droplets on the beak.
- The windows to the soul (The eyes): The entire humor of the meme lies in the huge, black eyes. These had to be perfectly symmetrical, deep black, and brought to life (while remaining completely resigned) through fine light reflections.
- The Abstract & Trash twist: To transform the motif from a simple “decal” into a true work of art, we didn’t just place it in isolation on the calf. We added dynamic, abstract ink splatters and fine, chaotic lines. This slight Trash Polka and abstract influence gives the tattoo a modern, raw aesthetic. It looks as if the owl just shook itself, scattering ink across the leg.
Why tattoos don’t always have to be serious
In our studio, we often experience clients asking almost apologetically: “Is this a stupid idea? It doesn’t really have any deep meaning, I just find it extremely funny.”
My answer to that is always the same: humor is one of the best and most honest meanings a tattoo can have! When you look in the mirror or at your leg every morning and can’t help but grin because a completely soaked owl is staring back at you, then that tattoo has fulfilled its purpose 100%. A meme tattoo is an expression of self-irony, character, and the ability to take life lightly.
