💎 Material Guide: Which Jewelry Is Really Good for Your Piercing?
Piercing jewelry is not all the same. What looks pretty can become a real burden for your skin—especially during the healing phase. That’s why choosing the right material isn’t just a matter of taste, but also a health issue. In this post, you’ll learn which materials are recommended—and which ones you should avoid.
🔍 The Most Important Jewelry Materials at a Glance
| Material | Suitable for Fresh Piercings? | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Titanium (Grade 23) | ✅ Yes | Biocompatible, lightweight, hypoallergenic, contains minimal nickel, long-lasting | Limited color variety without coating |
| PTFE / Bioplast | ✅ Yes | Flexible, good for pregnancy, MRI, CT appointments | Not quite as durable |
| Surgical Steel | ⚠️ Rather not | Affordable, robust | Contains high nickel content → risk for allergy sufferers |
| Real Gold (min. 14k) | ⚠️ Only after healing | Luxurious, elegant | High price, soft, allergy risk depending on alloy |
| Acrylic / Plastic | ❌ No | Lightweight, colorful | Porous, hygienically questionable, too many harmful substances |
| Wood, Horn | ❌ No | Natural, aesthetic | Not sterilizable, only after healing, cannot be properly cleaned |
👩⚕️ Ella’s Recommendation from Experience
“For fresh piercings, I always use medical-grade titanium (Grade 23) or PTFE—that’s the most hypoallergenic material available. It heals significantly better, doesn’t irritate the skin, and simply provides more safety.”
Additionally, Ella carries a selection of certified jewelry pieces in the studio made from Titanium G23, PTFE, and upon request also titanium piercings with gold plating options for already healed piercings.
💡 What to Look for When Buying Jewelry
- Nickel-free—really! Just because it says “low nickel” doesn’t automatically make it suitable for a healed piercing.
- No fashion jewelry for fresh piercings! Only buy piercing jewelry from professional studios, not from discount stores.
- Sterile packaging for initial jewelry is a must.
