Some tattoos don’t just age visually; at some point, they simply no longer suit the natural shape of the body. A classic problem involves straight lines or lettering tattooed across curvy areas like the waist or hips. They often look stiff and disrupt the silhouette instead of accentuating it.
When clients come to me with such a design, the solution is often not a small patch-up, but a complete reinvention. A massive cover-up across the entire side of the body – from the thigh, over the hip and ribs, up to the chest and underarm – is one of the most elaborate, yet rewarding, projects in the art of tattooing. As a tattoo artist and owner of Old Dragon Ink in Dinkelsbühl, I love taking on such monumental challenges. Using this stunning ‘work in progress’ project, we show you how we use roses, thorns, and a perfect anatomical flow to make an unloved tattoo disappear forever.
Project Analysis: The old lettering vs. the new flow
Let’s take a close look at the imagery. It impressively demonstrates why we had to think so big (and so organically) here.
- The Before State (Inlay): There was a dark, isolated rose on the ribs. From there, a long piece of lettering with two leaves stretched in a rigid, straight line right across the waist and down onto the thigh. This straight line completely ignored the beautiful, natural curves of the female hip and acted like a harsh cut.
- The cover-up strategy: Covering up a font on fair skin requires intelligent shading. We utilized the extreme detail of large roses and peonies. The deep black areas (color packing) between the petals and the dense, dark foliage at the bottom were placed precisely over the old lettering. The old tattoo wasn’t just painted over in black; it was practically “swallowed” by the new depth of the flowers.
- The anatomical flow: This is the most important aspect of a sidepiece tattoo. Instead of straight lines, we work with curved, organic shapes. Sweeping thorn vines, falling blossoms, and a delicate butterfly on the lower edge of the thigh guide the eye. The design now embraces the pelvis, accentuates the waist, and flows harmoniously up the ribs.

Floral motifs: The ultimate secret weapon for large-scale projects
Why do we often use flowers, leaves, and botanical elements for such massive cover-ups?
- Organic flexibility: Flowers do not have a fixed symmetry. We can extend leaves, bend blossoms, and make thorn vines grow exactly where we need them to cover old lines or to aesthetically accentuate the muscle and bone structure (like the hip bone).
- Contrast and depth: A floral motif in Black & Grey Realism offers the perfect interplay of solid shadows (for covering up) and light, soft areas (negative space). As a result, despite its massive size, the tattoo never feels like a heavy, dark block, but instead remains light and elegant.
Work in Progress: A journey that requires dedication
A tattoo that stretches from the thigh to the armpit is not created in a single afternoon. As the image reveals, this is a Work in Progress, where some areas are already healed and others are still being worked on.
- The pain factor: The ribs, the waist, and the area toward the armpit are among the most sensitive parts of the body. Such a project requires extreme endurance and discipline from the wearer.
- Day sessions: We work in structured day sessions here. Piece by piece, we build up the contrasts, let areas of the skin heal, and then seamlessly continue next time until the overall masterpiece is complete.
