Sometimes a story begins with the desire to hide a small youthful indiscretion – and ends in an impressive work of art that covers the entire arm. That’s exactly what happened with this current project at Old Dragon Ink.
The Challenge: More Than Just “Tattooing Over It”
In the gallery, you can see the before picture: a classic, dark tribal motif on the upper arm. Our client originally came to me with the idea of subtly covering this piece. But anyone who knows me knows: aesthetics and harmony come first. During the planning, it quickly became clear that a small cover-up wouldn’t do the arm justice. To truly make the old, dark tribal ink “invisible” while creating an aesthetic balance, we jointly decided on a radical but brilliant solution: a complete Tropical Floral Sleeve.
The Design: Dark Elegance Meets Botany
The new sleeve is a play of extreme contrasts. We opted for a very dark, rich black-and-grey design. Why?
- Perfect Coverage: Thanks to the high black content in the background, the old tribal completely disappears without any “shadows” of the past being visible.
- Depth & Dynamics: The bright accents of the Monstera leaves, orchids, and palm fronds truly pop against the dark background.
- Flow: The floral pattern conforms to the anatomy of the arm, which would never have looked so organic with an isolated cover-up.
Patience Pays Off
A project like this is not a sprint, but a marathon. Over many sessions, we worked layer by layer. Every leaf and every blossom was precisely placed to ensure that the cover-up is not only functional but, above all, a standalone work of art.
The Result: A Happy Client
The best part of my job? The client’s face when they look in the mirror after the last session. There’s nothing left of the initial concern that “it might be too big or too black.” Our client is super happy with their new look – an impressive, masculine yet elegant floral sleeve that tells a whole new story.
