Being unhappy with an old tattoo often means frustration, shame, or resignation. This was the case for this client: her old back tattoo—lettering with a butterfly—was blurred, inked too deep, and visibly scarred. The assumption: “You can only put something huge and dark over that.”
But at the Old Dragon Ink studio in Dinkelsbühl, she was shown that there is another way: delicate, colorful, floral—and above all, unique.
The old tattoo: inked deep, heavily scarred—a challenge
The existing design was problematic in several ways:
- Very thick lines that pushed through the skin texture
- Lack of clarity in the lettering
- Scarring, which requires special attention with new tattoos
A classic case for a well-planned cover-up. But instead of resorting to a dark, total-coverage solution, a light, playful composition of colorful blossoms was created here, which doesn’t just cover the old tattoo but gives it a whole new meaning.
Floral cover-up—when flowers are stronger than black
Dimi designed a custom tattoo that specifically works with colors, shadows, and shapes.
Featured elements include:
- Forget-me-nots, cornflowers, lavender, poppies, mallow
- Fine leaves, natural lines, vibrant colors
- A little bumblebee that adds lightness and a natural touch
The elements were placed to conceal the old lines while respecting the skin structure. The result: a vibrant, feminine bouquet that doesn’t feel like a compromise, but like a proud new statement on the skin.
Consultation instead of black blocks—what many people don’t know
When it comes to cover-ups, many people immediately think of thick bars, black areas, or large-scale tribal patterns. But with the right technique, creative design, and plenty of experience, even difficult tattoos can be reworked delicately and artistically.
Of course: a cover-up is a lot of work, and yes—it hurts. But that goes for any tattoo. The result is what matters—and it can be as delicate and colorful as you want it to be.
