What is a Curated Ear?
A Curated Ear is the opposite of random piercing. It’s a carefully thought-out concept where multiple piercings are placed on the ear to work together harmoniously. The individual anatomy of your ear (the shape of your cartilage folds and earlobes) serves as the foundation.
The goal? An ear that looks like an exquisite, permanent piece of jewelry—perfectly coordinated in color (e.g., all in rose gold), shape, and style (e.g., tiny crystals mixed with simple rings).
The Anatomy of the Ear: Ella’s Favorite Canvases
Your ear offers an incredible number of placement options. They’re roughly divided into two zones with completely different healing times: the soft earlobe (lobe) and the firm cartilage tissue. Here are the absolute favorites from our studio:
1. The Classics in Soft Tissue (Lobe Piercings)
The soft tissue at the lower end of the ear heals the fastest (about 6 to 8 weeks) and is nearly painless to pierce.
- Standard Lobe (1st, 2nd, or 3rd ear piercing): The absolute classic. Perfect for building a small row of delicate studs.
- Upper Lobe: Sits slightly higher on the earlobe, just below where the cartilage begins.
2. The Cartilage Piercings
Cartilage is firm and has no blood supply. Piercings in this area require more care and patience (healing time often 6 to 12 months), but offer stunning looks.
- Helix: The superstar on the upper, outer rim of the ear (often pierced as a double or triple helix).
- Tragus: The small, cartilaginous flap that sits right in front of the ear canal. A tiny sparkling stone looks extremely elegant here.
- Conch (Inner / Outer): Pierced through the large, shell-like hollow of the ear. A snug ring around the outer edge of the ear (once healed) is an absolute eye-catcher.
- Daith: Located in the innermost cartilage fold directly above the ear canal. Because of its position, there’s a persistent (but scientifically unproven) rumor that it can help with migraines. Visually, it’s the perfect spot for ornate, decorative clicker rings.
- Rook: Located in the upper cartilage fold, directly above the daith.
- Industrial: An absolute statement piercing. A long barbell (bar) connects two opposing helix piercings on the upper rim of the ear. Important: This piercing is extremely dependent on your anatomy and can’t be done on everyone!
Ella’s Golden Rules for Your Ear Project
If you’re dreaming of a sparkling Curated Ear, you shouldn’t just rush into the nearest piercing shop and get five holes at once. Ella always recommends professional patience:
1. Never Gun, Always Needle!
At Old Dragon Ink, we exclusively use sterile single-use needles. Piercing with guns (especially through cartilage) shatters the tissue, can cause severe inflammation, and is unhygienic since the guns can never be 100% sterilized. The needle, on the other hand, cuts a clean, precise channel.
2. The Right Initial Jewelry (Titanium)
A fresh piercing swells. That’s why Ella always initially inserts a slightly longer stud (often a labret) made of implant-grade titanium (ASTM F136). Titanium is completely nickel-free and guarantees the best healing. Only at the so-called downsize appointment (after the swelling goes down) do we switch to shorter jewelry or the highly desired rings.
3. Not Too Much at Once
Your body views each piercing as a wound that needs to heal. If you get three or four cartilage piercings at once, you overwhelm your immune system. Healing will be massively delayed, and the risk of complications (like hypertrophic scarring) increases. Ella recommends a maximum of 2 to 3 piercings (on one ear) per session.
4. The Sleep Problem (The Travel Pillow Trick)
A fresh cartilage piercing doesn’t tolerate pressure. If you sleep on it, the piercing channel gets irritated and the piercing can heal crooked. Ella’s tip: Get a travel neck pillow and position your ear in the opening at night.
