Anime and manga tattoos have undergone a massive evolution in recent years. In the past, characters from series like Dragon Ball, Naruto, or One Piece were almost exclusively tattooed in a colorful, flat comic style. But the scene has matured – and along with it, the fans and the art. Today, enthusiasts often want to wear their childhood heroes on their skin in a more mature, dark, and photorealistic look.

As the founder of Old Dragon Ink in Dinkelsbühl, my heart naturally beats faster for dragon motifs anyway. However, what our artist Mark has created here with this half-sleeve (upper arm tattoo) is an absolute masterpiece for every anime fan. He has torn the legendary dragon Shenlong (Shenron) from the Dragon Ball Z universe out of its comic world and translated it into a menacing, tangible reality. Let’s analyze this fantastic project and the technique behind it in more detail.
Project Analysis: Shenlong in the real world
Let’s take a look at this massive project. Every fan of the series knows the moment when the sky darkens and the mighty wish-granting dragon is summoned. This tattoo perfectly captures that exact epic, slightly menacing atmosphere.
- From comic to realism: Mark took the classic, rather simple lines of the anime source material and completely reinterpreted them. The dragon no longer looks like a drawing, but like a real, living monster. The massive horns, the extremely detailed texture of the scales, and the aggressive, wide-open jaw give Shenlong an incredible presence and raw power.
- The anatomical flow: A dragon provides the perfect foundation for an arm tattoo. Its long, serpentine body was designed by Mark to wrap smoothly around the curves of the upper arm and shoulder. The motif does not look stuck on, but rather utilizes the wearer’s musculature to appear even more substantial.
The ultimate eye-catcher: The art of “Color Pop”
The artisanal highlight and absolute eye-catcher of this project is the intentional stylistic contrast created by color.
In the lower section of the tattoo, the legendary four-star Dragon Ball floats (fans know: this is the sphere belonging to Son Goku’s grandfather, Son Gohan). Instead of keeping this in grey as well, Mark applied the so-called Color Pop technique (Selective Color) here.
- Maximum contrast: The entire tattoo is executed in a very moody, high-contrast Black & Grey realism style. The background is shaded extremely dark (Heavy Blackwork). Against this gloomy backdrop, the vibrant, rich orange-red of the Dragon Ball literally begins to glow.
- The focus effect: Our eyes are magically drawn to this single splash of color. The color contrast significantly enhances the depth of the rest of the Black & Grey tattoo and gives the entire piece of art a magical, mystical aura.
Mark’s technical precision
Such a “mashup” of anime culture and realism requires extreme technical skill. Here, Mark demonstrates absolute mastery in texturing.
- The scales: Every single scale on the dragon’s belly and back is worked out with the finest shading to make them appear three-dimensional and armor-like.
- Light and Shadow: Through butter-smooth transitions (smooth shading) on the snout and horns, as well as the strategic use of white highlights (white ink) in the eyes and on the teeth, the dragon’s face appears wet, lifelike, and extremely three-dimensional.
