An old tattoo can sometimes be not only visually but also physically disturbing – especially when it doesn’t fit the anatomy. That was exactly the case with this project at Old Dragon Ink in Dinkelsbühl:
An aging design with weak colors, a horizontal tribal cutting harshly across the upper arm, and an empty lower half – the result was unharmonious and disproportionate.
The client thought the only solution was a large black area. But Dimi showed her: With creativity, color, and a sense of form, there’s another way – a much better one.
The Problem: No Flow, No Color Depth, No Harmony
The original tattoo consisted of:
- a faded, color-poor floral design
- an unusually placed tribal cutting across the image
- no clear composition in the lower arm area
All in all, the tattoo looked like patchwork – with no connection to the body, no depth, no story. This is exactly where a strong cover-up comes in: not just covering over – but rethinking.
The Solution: A Japanese-Inspired Color Concept with Architectural Depth
Together with the client, Dimi developed a completely new image:
A harmonious mix of:
- colorful magnolia blossoms
- a traditional Japanese temple
- delicate cherry blossoms and playful details like butterflies
- and a mirrored motif in the water creating depth and flow
The tribal was cleverly dissolved, integrated into the new image structure, and made visually “invisible” – through smart color choices and motif layering. The entire tattoo was anatomically adjusted to follow the natural contour of the arm – from shoulder to lower edge.
Cover-Up Doesn’t Mean Black. It Means a Fresh Start.
Too often, old tattoos are met with black – but that’s not always necessary. Especially with floral or artistic concepts, old lines can be dissolved through color, contrasts, and composition without the result looking heavy or compromised.
This project is proof of that. Instead of a black block, a colorful masterpiece emerged that makes the wearer feel completely renewed – not just visually, but emotionally too.
