Between pages and purrs: When what you truly love gets under your skin

There are those perfect moments in life you wish you could freeze forever. For many people, it’s a rainy afternoon, curled up on the couch, a gripping book in one hand and the gentle purring of a beloved pet on your lap. It’s the very definition of comfort and calm.

One of our clients, a total “bookworm” and proud cat mom, wanted to immortalize that feeling not only in her heart, but on her skin too. The result is a stunning Black and Grey Realism Tattoo that’s still currently in progress. In this post, we take a behind-the-scenes look at this “work in progress” project by our artist Dimi at Old Dragon Ink in Dinkelsbühl—and show why combining personal passions creates the best tattoo ideas.

Image analysis: The symbiosis of literature and love for animals

Even though the tattoo isn’t fully finished yet, the first major session already reveals the masterful quality and emotional depth of the design.

The motif: The cat on the book

At the heart of the design sits the client’s beloved cat—majestic, yet completely relaxed. She’s perched on an open book that almost feels like a pedestal for her fluffy companion. Dimi has captured the discipline of animal portraiture (pet portrait) beautifully here. The fur texture is worked out with incredible detail—you can almost feel how soft it is. The cat’s alert, attentive gaze gives the tattoo a soul. This scene is framed by delicate, fine leaves (botanical elements), which add a feminine lightness and a border to the otherwise substantial main motif.

Two passions, one work of art

This tattoo is a perfect example of individual storytelling on skin. Instead of getting “just” a cat or “just” a book tattooed, the two most important anchors in the client’s life were merged into one.

  • The cat tattoo: It honors a true family member. Pets stand by us unconditionally, and a tattoo is a beautiful way to make that deep bond last beyond a pet’s lifetime.
  • The book tattoo: It stands for imagination, diving into other worlds, education, and a personal place to retreat (escapism).

Together, they create an incredibly powerful, personal statement.

Work in progress: Good things take time

What’s special about the photos we’re sharing here: the tattoo is still “in progress” (unfinished). But why isn’t a piece of art like this completed in a single session?

For large-scale, highly detailed realism tattoos, multiple sessions are the standard in professional studios. And there are good reasons for that:

  1. Protecting the skin (skin trauma): Human skin has a natural tolerance limit. After a few hours of tattooing, the tissue swells and no longer takes ink in optimally. To avoid scarring and ensure a clean healing result, a good artist ends the session in time.
  2. Pain threshold: A tattoo on the side (ribcage/waist) is one of the more painful areas. Breaking it into stages makes the project much more comfortable and relaxed for the client.
  3. Layer by layer to perfection: In the first session (the one we see here), the outlines, basic structures, and the first soft shading are usually done. In the next session, once everything has healed, it’s time for contrast. Dimi will work in deeper blacks (blackfill) to boost contrast, and finish with white highlights (white ink) to make the cat’s eyes and fur pop. That’s when the tattoo truly comes to life.

Anatomy and placement: The elegance of the silhouette

The choice of placement for this project is absolutely outstanding. The motif runs from the ribs down to the waist and hip (side-rib placement).

This area is extremely popular with women for larger, organic motifs. The design follows the natural S-curve of the female body. The straight line of the open book creates a solid base at hip height, while the cat’s upright posture and the climbing leaves follow the natural shape of the ribcage upward. Despite its size, the tattoo visually elongates the silhouette and looks unbelievably elegant and flattering.

Your own story tattoo at Old Dragon Ink

A tattoo doesn’t have to follow general trends. The best motifs are the ones that tell a story about you. Whether it’s your passion for cooking, your love for a particular instrument, your enthusiasm for video games, or—like here—your endless love for your pet and a good book: all of it can be combined into a breathtaking work of art.

At Old Dragon Ink, we love putting those personal puzzle pieces together. We take the time to turn your ideas into a custom design that’s perfectly matched to your body’s lines. And we’ll guide you professionally through every single session—from the first stencil to the final, fully healed highlight.

Which two passions would you combine on your skin? Tell us your story, and let’s create something together that lasts!
