Tattoos are often far more than just body decoration. They are processed grief, pure love, and living memory. Especially when a beloved family member—and our dogs undoubtedly count as such—passes away, the desire to create a memorial is strong.
In my studio Old Dragon Ink, I (Dimi) recently had the honor of bringing such a heartfelt project to life. It was about a dog portrait that should capture not just the appearance, but above all the essence and story of the animal.
More than just realism: A design with deeper meaning
A couple came to me with a very special request. Their dog had passed away and left a huge void. But this was no “ordinary” dog. He had a difficult past before finding a loving home with them. This past had left its mark: The dog suffered from a psychological disorder, was sometimes confused, and carried an inner restlessness.
We wanted to capture exactly this duality of his nature in the tattoo.
As you can see in the photos, we chose a blend of photorealism and an abstract “destroyer” style:
- The left side shows the photorealistic portrait: The clear, loyal gaze, the soft fur—the dog as he was in his best moments, loved and safe.
- The right side breaks apart: It shows a destructive design where the face fragments into stone-like pieces, enveloped by blue smoke and energy.
This break symbolizes the psychological struggles and the confused side of his personality. It’s a design that doesn’t sugarcoat reality, but honors the dog as he truly was: Unique, loved, but also marked by life.
A shared memorial
What made this project special was that both partners got this design tattooed. We modified the design slightly for each of them so it remains individual while still showing their deep connection. They are overjoyed with the result, and for me as an artist, it’s the greatest compliment that we’re already planning more projects together.
