The 90s and early 2000s brought several trends to the tattoo world that often cause frustration today. At the very top of this list: the classic, deep black tribal. Back then, it was an absolute must, but these massive lines often look clunky and restless today, and rarely fit the wearer’s current lifestyle. The level of distress is especially high when these old motifs are located on sensitive or very feminine parts of the body.
The biggest hurdle for many clients, however, is the fear of the solution. The thought of a cover-up often brings up horror images of huge, even darker black blocks or illegible ink splatters. “I’m sure that can’t be covered up nicely and subtly anymore,” is a sentence I hear extremely often in consultations.
As a tattoo artist and owner of Old Dragon Ink in Dinkelsbühl, it is a personal concern of mine to alleviate exactly these fears. Using our current project, we show you how we transformed a prominent 90s tribal in a very delicate area into a filigree, soft, and thoroughly feminine work of art – completely without black bars.
The starting point: A tribal on the lower abdomen and the fear of the cover-up
Let’s take a look at the before picture (in the small inlay). The initial situation is an absolute classic that many women will recognize:
- The old motif: A typical, curved 90s tribal on the lower abdomen, right at the transition to the groin area. Although the lines had faded somewhat over time, they still displayed a massive black base structure.
- The client’s concern: The client had grown tired of this design for years. She wanted this intimate area to look beautiful and aesthetic again, but she didn’t see any real way out. In her mind, covering those thick, black lines would inevitably require an even more massive, dark tattoo. She fully expected a compromise that would be anything but delicate.
The surprise: Floral elegance instead of a black block
In our detailed consultation, we were able to completely alleviate this concern. A masterful cover-up does not mean applying ink like a paint roller. It means completely redirecting the viewer’s gaze through skillful contrasts and intelligent design.
The result is a breathtaking, softly shaded rose in Black & Grey Realism. After the session, the client was completely thrilled by how delicate and feminine the final solution looked. How did we solve this technically?
- Intelligent use of shadows (Color Packing): We didn’t just paint over the old tribal. The darkest and densest areas of the new flower – i.e., the deep center of the rose and the shadows directly under the large, folding petals – were placed exactly over the most prominent lines of the old tribal. The old black now serves as natural depth for the flower.
- Soft gradients (Smooth Shading): The key to the femininity and delicacy of this tattoo lies in the outer edges. The tips of the petals, the small rosebud at the top, and the fine leaves fade into a whisper-soft, light grey (greywash). As a result, the design does not look like a hard stamp on the skin, but rather like a soft pencil drawing that gently merges with the skin tone.
- Filigree details and negative space: Instead of filling everything in, we deliberately left bright highlights (negative space) in the leaves. This adds lightness to the design and finally breaks up the old, clunky tribal shape.
